2009: URGENT APPEAL FOR HELP

Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Jamyang and the monks of Sera Mey Monastic University (Mysore, Karnataka, India) wish to thank all our generous benefactors for your help and donations over the past year. After four months of dire crisis when the monastery was shut down and the 1,320 monks were dispersed to fend for themselves, your overwhelming response dramatically reversed the situation and spared them a lasting famine crisis. At present the whole Sangha has resumed their normal practice and studies. We wish to pay homage to all Buddhists practitioners and friends for your support of Sera Mey Monastic University, one historical pillar of Tibetan Buddhism whose dedication to educating, preserving and perpetuating the traditions of Buddhism has contributed to the continued practice of the ideals of compassion and wisdom for generations.

For now the immediate preoccupation for food is relieved for the next few months. However the long-term future is most uncertain and after a temporary relief the danger of food shortage is still very ominous. The convergence of changes in the world scene and the lasting internal difficulties forecast inescapably the grave perspective of a bleak future. The monks cannot find enough sustenance from farming a poor land and to compound that, their farming land has been greatly diminished due to the need for new housing for new refugees. Moreover with the influx of new children escaping from Tibet the number of monks at Sera Mey Monastic University has grown to 1,465. With the responsibility to assure their survival and their education, the resources of Sera Mey are stretched to its limits affording no more than 1$/day per monk. This bare minimum allows the monks to subsist on the most frugal diet made up uniquely of rice, dahl and tea day after day.

Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Jamyang at 76 years of age is older and weaker by the day unable to carry on his shoulders the whole burden of supporting Sera Mey by himself any longer. But he spared no effort to nurture concrete projects gathering people of good will to help plan for a longer and more sustainable future. He hopes to be able to break in the near future the circle of precariousness and deprivation that has undermined Sera Mey. However, the temporary relief brought on by your generous aid is about to end, even their frugal meals will soon be difficult to maintain for much longer. Therefore Khensur Rinpoche in spite of his age and failing health is about to take the road again looking for ways to support Sera Mey monastery.
Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Jamyang and the monks of Sera Mey ardently wish to appeal to your generosity and your support for this year 2009 so to allow the 1,465 monks of Sera Mey to be spared the very real danger of a food crisis like the one in the past year and to be able to keep on practicing Dharma and building an ever more compassionate world for all sentient beings.

THÔNG BÁO XIN GIÚP ĐỞ TĂNG ĐOÀN SERA MEY NĂM 2009

Đại Sư Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Jamyang cùng toàn thể các Sư Tăng của Đại Học Phật Giáo Sera Mey tại Mysore, Karnataka, Ấn-Độ xin chân thành cãm tạ quý vị ân nhân, quý vị Phật tử và đạo hữu xa gần đã giúp đở Sera Mey trong cơn hoạn nạn trong năm vừa qua. Trong bốn tháng Đại Học Sera Mey đã phải đống cửa vì hết lương thực, và tất cả Sư Tăng đã phải ngừng tu học và phân tán để tự mưu sinh. Tiếng kinh kệ đã im lặng, chùa trở nên hoang vắng lạnh lùng. Nhờ hồng ân của chư Phật, sự đáp ứng nồng hậu và tình đoàn kết mạnh mẽ của quý ân nhân đã ngăn chận kịp thời cơn khủng hoảng và cứu vãng định mệnh của Tăng đoàn chùa Sera Mey. Đại Sư và các Sư Tăng xin mãi mãi tri ân quý vị.

Mặc dù mối lo ngại khan hiếm thực phẩm hiện nay đã được tạm gát qua nhưng tương lai thì thật đáng lo ngại vì không lâu lương thực cũng sẽ cạn hết. Thêm vào đó những biến cố trên thế giới và những khó khăn nội bộ ngày càng tạo thêm một viễn ảnh đen tối cho tương lai và sự sinh tồn của Sera Mey. Các Sư không kiếm được mưu sinh qua việc canh tát trồng trọt vì đất rất nghèo, không đủ phì nhiêu vã lại mấy năm nay các Sư đã mất rất nhiều đất để xây định cư cho các người tỵ nạn mới đến. Gần đây với sự gia nhập của rất nhiều thiếu nhi tỵ nạn từ Tây Tạng đến, số chư tăng nay đã lên đến 1,465 vị. Dù các Sư Tăng nay chỉ sống với ít hơn 1$/ngày, thức ăn thật đạm bạc thiếu thốn ngày qua ngày chỉ có cơm, đậu và trà mà thôi, nhưng tài lực của Sera Mey cũng không lo đủ.

Đại Sư năm nay đã gần 76 tuổi, già yếu hơn, không còn đủ sức gánh vác trọng trách bảo trợ lương thực cho Tăng đoàn Sera Mey một mình nữa. Nhưng Đại Sư không chịu bó tay trước nghịch cảnh, không ngừng cố gắng ấp ủ một số chương trình thiết thực và hữu hiệu với sự giúp đở của các đạo hữu Phật tử thiện nguyện hầu xây dựng một tương lai bền vững lâu dài. Ước nguyện của Khensur Rinpoche là trong một tương lai rất gần có thể đánh vỡ gông cùm khắc khe xiết chặt Tăng đoàn Sera Mey trong vòng thiếu hụt lương thực triền miên.

Tiếc thay vì nguồn lương thực cứư trợ sắp cạn hết, Đại Sư không thể yên nghĩ và hiện đang lên đường trở lại để làm tròn nhiệm vụ của Sư. Đại Sư cùng Sư Tăng của Sera Mey xin tha thiết kêu gọi tình đoàn kết tương trợ của quý Phật tử đạo hữu để giúp đỡ 1,465 Sư Tăng tránh khỏi nạn thiếu hụt lương thực năm nay. Lòng hảo tâm của quý vị sẽ giúp đỡ bảo tồn Đại Học Sera Mey là nơi tu học và truyền bá Phật Pháp, và góp phần xây dựng một tương lai từ bi hỷ xã cho chúng sanh.

Thay mặt cho tất cả sư tăng, xin các đạo hữu và quý vị hảo tâm tiếp nhận lời cảm tạ chân thành của Đại Sư Khensur Rinpoche và các vị sư tăng của Đại Học Phật giáo Sera Mey.
